RADARSAT, COSMO-SKYMED, TERRASAR-X\u2026) orbit the Earth on a near-polar orbit at an altitude ranging from 500 to 800 km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar, known as InSAR, is a specific satellite-based technique using RADAR data for mapping Earth\u2019s topography and ground deformation by estimating, with a millimetric accuracy, very small surface movements up to decimetric variations over time.<\/span><\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"bloc bloc--gcom bloc--texte  \nbloc--padding-bottom--0\">\n\n    <div class=\"frow gutters  justify-center\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12-14\">\n                            <h3 class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;line-height: normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">How this technology works?<\/span><\/h3>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"bloc bloc--gcom bloc--texte  bloc--padding-top--0\nbloc--padding-bottom--0\">\n\n    <div class=\"frow gutters  justify-center\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12-14\">\n                            <p>The InSAR technology has been developed in the 1990s and the combination of the InSAR technique and the Geographic Information System (GIS) allows to perform spatial analysis to detect ground movement resulting from geological phenomena and\/or anthropological activities, in urban, industrial and natural areas. Initially used in Europe, North America and Asia to monitor landslides and civil infrastructures projects, InSAR technology has been extended around the world and found its applications for which an accurate timely response is required: tectonic or earthquake deformations, volcanic pre eruptions, slope displacements, buildings and infrastructures stability, mining and underground storages (CO2, hydrocarbon) and in general, any surface or object that may be affected by subsidence.<br \/>\nInSAR can be used as historical (area status before works) or current study (construction, management, maintenance).<br \/>\nUnlike the optical imagery, this technique works at night and is not affected by cloud cover. The acquisition is however limited by forest covered areas.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"bloc bloc--gcom bloc--texte  bloc--padding-top--petit\nbloc--padding-bottom--0\">\n\n    <div class=\"frow gutters  justify-center\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12-14\">\n                            <p>The radar sensors emit electromagnetic waves with a specific frequency (GHz) within the microwave domain (cm) and analyzed the reflected signals. A SAR image is a combination of amplitude and phase information. Amplitude data depends on sensor parameters and target physical properties and defines the amount of energy backscattered by each ground-surface pixel. Phase information is related to the signal travel between the radar antenna and the target on the ground surface. The InSAR technique is based on the phase measurement and image data comparison.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"bloc bloc--gcom bloc--texte  bloc--padding-top--petit\nbloc--padding-bottom--0\">\n\n    <div class=\"frow gutters  justify-center\">\n        <div class=\"col-md-12-14\">\n                            <p style=\"text-align: left\">Over the concerned study area, when a point (pixel) on the ground moves, the radar-ground distance changes, affecting the phase information. Consequently, any displacement of the ground target creates a phase shift and can be detected with specific algorithm (analysis and comparison of phase values acquired at different time regarding to a reference point). The last methodology developments combine several processing techniques and algorithms to provide high precision measurements for all ranges of ground displacement, even in non-linear deformation areas.<br \/>\nThe big number of processed ground pixels allow to create a reliable statistical base of ground measurement points and to identify which pixels contain usable information and which contain noise.<br \/>\nWhatever the used satellite and the type of measurement points, the InSAR study delivers the following information :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geographic coordinates of the measurement point (latitude, longitude, elevation), with precision about 1m,<\/li>\n<li>Average annual velocity of the measurement point. The precision is depending on the number of available data, but typically &lt; 1 mm\/year,<\/li>\n<li>Time-series of the ground point displacement with precision values typically &lt; 5 mm,<\/li>\n<li>Different kind of maps : displacement, velocity, acceleration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"bloc bloc--gcom bloc--media complementary monitoring to other ones such seismic, geomechanical or hydrogeological since it<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provides a precise picture of a global deformation (pipeline ways, buildings, well-head plateforms, site \u2026), especially with projects in coastal or reclaimed areas,<\/li>\n<li>provides spatially dense map of geodetic observations (hundreds to thousands of points per km\u00b2) not achievable with conventional techniques (GPS, tiltmeters\u2026),<\/li>\n<li>helps to identify critical spots,<\/li>\n<li>helps to predict which areas (or structures) will most likely be vulnerable to deformation,<\/li>\n<li>helps to manage and optimize the UGS (fault movement and reactivation, geological bloc compartmentation, environmental impact of subsidence and uplift induced by fluid injection and\/or extraction),<\/li>\n<li>provides information on ground instabilities which can be highly useful for planning risk or damages mitigation measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The InSAR technology presents several advantages including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>archived radar images allow looking back in time to 1992 (depending of the satellite),<\/li>\n<li>no requirement of onsite personal and no additional site equipment,<\/li>\n<li>large spatial coverage,<\/li>\n<li>high spatial density of measurement points with high spatial resolution,<\/li>\n<li>highly accurate results (mm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Geostock uses this technology since 2008 over a critical subsidence area and for several years over underground storage projects
